Alcatraz

Cobb County, Marietta Photographer

The public never wanted to know that real Alcatraz. Even today after the prison has been closed for so many decades, the public just won’t let go of the myths
. -Philip Bergen, former captain of the guards

My five-year-old son has been asking a lot of questions lately about jail: “Have you ever been?” “What does it look like?” “What do you eat?” “Do you have to go to school there?”. So, try to scare him away from jail as much as possible, I showed him my pictures from our trip to Alcatraz this Summer (and proceeded to convince him that this is what jail looks like currently…oh and that it is haunted too).  In doing so, it made me eager to share these pictures with more than just my little one, especially that gorgeous sunset on our way back to the dock!

We took the night tour (official info HERE), which gave us the chance to see all sides of the prison from the water, because the boat does a full loop around the island before docking, versus pulling straight up as they do for the daytime tour.  The views were pretty incredible, and it’s hard to imagine being stuck on that island as a prisoner and not being able to enjoy the scenery!  I would love to do a ghost tour of the place when it’s pitch dark (although they saaaaay that it’s not haunted, but I’m not so sure…).  The stories and the history of the prison is truly fascinating, and it really did feel like we stepped back in time when we were inside.  To top it all off, the sunset that night coming back to shore was the most beautiful sunset that I’ve seen in a long time.  The San Fransisco skyline was painted pink and purple, and I couldn’t take enough pictures, even though the pictures hardly do it justice!  I highly recommend the night tour of Alcatraz the next time anyone is in the San Fransisco area.

“It’s mighty good to get up and leave. This Rock ain’t good for nobody.”
-Frank Weatherman, last con to leave (1963)
